Department of Zoology

Since the time of Aristotle, the concept of zoology has undergone a series of paradigm shifts during the course of the development of varying knowledge-based principles. Starting off as an integrated viewpoint of the assimilation of age-old classical disciplines as well as modern aspects, zoology led to be an ever dynamic and vibrant branch of sciences. Viewed from an anthropocentric perspective, zoology was perceived to be exploited by the humans. With the recognition of perturbation as a prime component of science, zoology has enabled to bring about a broader understanding of the totality of the animal kingdom along with its linkages with the Earth, nature, environment, civilization, culture, society, ecosystem and at last, but not the least human welfare. To achieve the goal of the resultant shift in the developmental process, zoology has ramified its subsets namely non-chordate and chordate biology, endocrinology, biochemistry, biophysics, cytology, genetics, immunology, biotechnology, fisheries, entomology, ecology, ethology, taxonomy, biodiversity and wildlife conservation and management, animal husbandry, embryology, developmental biology, animal and environmental physiology, molecular biology, neurobiology, evolutionary biology, parasitology, epidemiology, microbiology, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence application and so many arrays. The nature and scope of zoology is also towering as soon as the aforesaid subsets have processed a greater realization in the field of knowledge-based education system and professional arena. Now, a student of zoology can have a larger number of choices to work from cell to biosphere. Henceforth, the subject is offering to be an academician, a researcher, an ecologist, a field biologist, a conservationist, a taxonomist, an immunologist and many more. For decades, the Post Graduate Department of Zoology of this College has been credited to carry out its duty to cater the first generation and second-generation learners in North Bengal particularly in the district of Cooch Behar and its neighbouring districts like Jaipaiguri and Alipurduar and states like Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. To play the perfect role in the venue of higher education, the Department is conducting all the possible means of teaching and learning like classroom teaching, online and smart classroom teaching, organizing students’ seminars, arranging lectures and interactive sessions with renowned scientists and academicians from different corners of the country, visiting research institutes and taking on field studies and educational excursions in various areas like tea gardens, crop fields, national parks, reserve forests and conservatories inside and outside of the state of West Bengal. Besides these, the Department keeps itself engaged in taking care for moral development in particular and all-round development in general of the students. The departmental faculty members also serve as mentors to solve the students’ several educational and socio-economic problems. It entertains bi-annual parents’-teachers’ meetings in order to discuss academic progress and weakness of the students. These meetings tend to show the need of arrangement of remedial classes for academically weaker and economically back warded UG and PG students. The Department possesses a tangible and substantive vision and mission for building the responsible future citizens of the country and the globe as well.

Humanities and Social Science (Economics, Education, Geography, History, Philosophy, Political Science)

At present this department offers both Undergraduate Honours and Programme courses in Economics under CBCS system as stipulated by West Bengal Higher Education Council and mandated by University Grants Commission.
Economics as put forth by Paul Samuelson is a living and evolving subject. It helps to logically analyse a wide variety of issues people face in their everyday life. The analytical techniques used in the discipline help to improve communication and numerical ability, skills of abstraction, skills of logical deduction and critical thinking ability of the students. Studying economics provides insights into the resource allocation decisions, opportunity costs and trade- offs, dilemmas in public policy, foreign trade competition, environmental problems with economic problem-solving outlook etc.
The college authority always makes sincere effort to nurture above skills among students by organizing memorial lectures, debates, invited lectures, educational excursions, seminars and workshops besides regular classroom teaching. Moreover, the curriculum of undergraduate Economics Honours course  under CBCS system is so structured that it can provide diverse career opportunities for students in the future mainly in the financial and banking sector, administrative jobs, research firms and NGOs.

Department of Education

The word Education has a wider connotation.  Philosophers from Socrates to Dewey in the West and from Kautilya to Gandhi in the East have defined Education in accordance with their philosophy of life with the result that there emerged divergent concepts and definitions of Education. However, it can be said that Education is a process which begins at birth and continues throughout life. It is a continuous and lively process.
As an academic discipline, Education is the study of the process of receiving and giving systematic instruction. As a degree, it mixes a theoretical grounding in the history, anthropology, sociology and economics of education, psychology and human development, and applied courses on teaching methods. Education will cease to be purposeful and will lack its vibrant implication without philosophy and sociology of education. While the philosophy is concerned with determining the ends of education, the sociology of education determines the means to be used for their actualisation.
Different degrees may specialise in areas such as early childhood education, health and physical education, primary teaching, secondary teaching or secondary teaching/vocational education. They can also allow the students to specialise in teaching a specific subject matter.
The birth of Education as an independent subject of study at A.B.N. Seal College, is not more than three years old and a host of interested candidates have opted for the subject since its inception. As the subject offers a comprehensive character therefore, the prospects of the subject are also widely stretched.
A degree in the subject under the guidelines of UGC ,following the directives of Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University, the affiliating university, will give the students a set of strategic transferable skills such as an ability to work and communicate with people at large, effective oral and written communication expertise, concepts on information and communication technology popularly known as ICT , research and analytical skills, problem-solving skills, teamwork ability, self-management, organisation and time management skills.
In addition, the course will help the students to design curricula, plan lessons, target the learning capability of pupils and create healthy and congenial learning environment.
An education degree is perfect if one enjoys the proximity of working with young people and helping them develop their sense of serious thinking and character. Graduates often end up as teachers in primary or secondary school. Still focusing on individual children’s formation, others develop careers as youth workers, careers advisers, teaching assistants or speech therapists.
Studying Education is also good if one becomes interested in macro-scale projects and systems.  Graduates can join becoming a community education officer or an education administrator. They can also work in adult education and training, curriculum design, education projects, education policy making and educational NGOs.
More so, Education is a safe option if students decide to change their direction of career and go into other enterprises where strong analytical and communication skills are valued such as the civil service, marketing, Public Relations stretching to advertising or even consultancy.

Department of Geography

The Department of Geography was established under the University of North Bengal in 2009 and presently is under Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University from the year 2015. This department opened a new horizon for the students, eager to study ‘Earth Science’, in Cooch Behar and surroundings. It is an undergraduate department, offering Honours and General courses to students under ‘1+1+1 system’ and offering Core and Programme courses to students under ‘Choice Based Credit System’. Along with theory classes, the department offers hands on training with a host of field and laboratory instruments. The department organizes ‘Students’ Seminar’, ‘Memorial Lecture’ and field excursions on regular basis.
Geography as a field of learning is closely related to the significance of spatial relations of different terrestrial attributes: either being physical or organic. It is a multi-disciplinary course containing a focal theme on the activity of mankind showing a keen approach of sustainable development. It always helps the students to get involved with finding out the condition of their own environs in correlation to broader confinement.
The subject Geography also offers a wide range of job opportunity for its successful scholars: from various stages of academics to high levelled arenas of administration. The study of this subject thus becomes a pre-requisite for bringing up good and dutiful citizens in local society.

Department of History

Any subject of study needs validation and its advocates must explain why it is worthy of attention.  History is a subject that widely attracts those people who like to gather and get associated with a host of   information and modes of thought involved. But there are more reasons as to why it is significant to get related with a subject like History especially in a society that quite correctly expects education to serve useful purposes. History is in fact very useful, actually indispensable, but the products of historical study are less noticeable, sometimes takes longer period to become tangible, than those that stem from some other disciplines.
Nevertheless, History should be studied because it is essential to individuals and to society, and because it harbours beauty. There are many ways to discuss the real functions of the subject—as there are many different historical talents and many different paths to historical meaning. All definitions of history's utility, however, rely on certain fundamental facts which are dealt below:

History Helps Us Understand People and Societies:

In the first place, history offers a storehouse of information about how people and societies have acted and are about to act. This, fundamentally, is why we cannot avoid history: it offers the only extensive evidential base for the contemplation and analysis of how societies function, and people need to have some sense of how societies are run simply to run their own lives.

History Helps Us Understand Change and How the Society we live in, emerged:

The second reason history is inescapable as a subject of serious study follows closely on the first. The past causes the present, and so the future. Any time we try to know why something happened and this becomes possible only through studying history. It is only through history can we begin to comprehend the factors that cause change; and only through history can we understand what elements of an institution or a society persist despite change.
History is a continuous process with “Construction, Deconstruction and Reconstruction”. And this is the very vigour of History.

History Contributes to Moral Understanding:

History also provides a landscape for moral contemplation. Studying the stories of individuals and situations in the past allows a student of history to test his or her own moral sense, to refine it against some of the real complexities’ individuals have faced in difficult settings. Histories that tell the national story, emphasizing distinctive features of the national experience, are meant to drive home an understanding of national values and a commitment to national loyalty.

History Provides Identity:

History also helps in establishing an identity, and this is unquestionably one of the reasons all modern nations encourage its teaching in some form. Historical data include evidence about how families, groups, institutions and whole countries were formed and about how they have evolved while retaining cohesion.
History provides data about the emergence of national institutions, problems, and values—it's the only significant storehouse of such data available. It offers evidence about how nations have interacted with other societies, providing international and comparative perspectives essential for responsible citizenship. Further, studying history helps us understand how recent, current, and prospective changes that affect the lives of citizens are emerging or may emerge and what causes are involved. More important, studying history encourages habits of mind that are vital for responsible public deeds, whether as a national or community leader, an informed voter, a petitioner, or a simple observer. Thus it is beyond doubt that History has its own flavour, it carries its own Values and obligations whether appreciated or not.
A.B. N. Seal College, Cooch Behar offers History as a subject in both under-graduate and Post-graduate level. A host of interested candidates who take admission in this subject gets benefitted in a number of ways which are summarized briefly.
The study of history builds experience in dealing with and assessing various kinds of evidence. Further the students would be able to grasp historical trends, historiography and historical debates after completion of programme.
Learning history means gaining some skill in sorting through diverse, often conflicting interpretations. Learning how to identify and evaluate conflicting interpretations is an essential citizenship skill for which history, as an often-contested laboratory of human experience, provides training.
Experience in assessing past examples of change is vital to understanding change in society today. Analysis of change means developing some capacity for determining the magnitude and significance of change, for some changes are more fundamental than others. Comparing particular changes to relevant examples from the past helps students of history develop this unique capacity.
History is useful for work. Its study helps create good professionals, political leaders. The number of explicit professional jobs for historians is considerable, but most people who study history do not become professional historians. Professional historians teach at various levels, work in museums, archaeological hubs and media centres They get an opportunity to  do historical researches, or participate in the growing number of historical consultancies. These categories are important—indeed vital—to keep the basic enterprise of history going, but most people who study history use their training for broader professional purposes. Students of history find their experience directly relevant to jobs in a variety of careers as well as to further study in fields like law and public administration.
Master’s programme offered in this institution, gives scope for doing project work and dissertation. The Project Paper is intended to give the students a first-hand feel of independent research and act as a foundation for their future research activities.
Work in history also improves basic writing and speaking skills and is directly relevant to many of the analytical requirements in the public and private sectors, where the capacity to identify, assess, and explain trends is essential. Historical study is unquestionably an asset for a variety of work and professional situations, even though it does not, for most students, lead as directly to a particular job slot, as do some technical fields. But history particularly prepares students for the long pull in their careers, its qualities helping adaptation and advancement beyond entry-level employment.
Knowing history depends on one’s personal sensitivity, where one finds beauty, the joy of discovery, or intellectual challenge. Between the inescapable minimum and the pleasure of deep commitment comes the history that, through collective skill in interpreting the unfolding human record, provides a real understanding of how the world has thought, worked and survived.

Department of Philosophy

Primarily the students who intend to do Major in Philosophy will be able to acquire knowledge that is vital to the discipline of Philosophy, including knowledge of core concepts, distinctions, theories, argumentative techniques, movements and influential figures, within the core fields of aesthetics, ethics, epistemology, logic, metaphysics and social and political philosophy.
In this direction, the curriculum also imbibes a profound and reflective awareness about the world and understanding of reality as discussed in Indian and Western tradition to equip the students with a comprehensive world- view.
The discipline also instils moral values amidst students making them aware about social issues including moral obligations and rights as well which nowadays is so very lacking from social consciousness.
Those pursuing Honours in Philosophy are encouraged to think creatively and independently, exploring possibilities beyond those embedded in prevailing opinion and practice. Likewise, students develop a strong sense of critical, imaginative and informed power of reasoning, through which they are able to understand the interpretations of human mind, language, morality, politics, art, logic, as they become aware of the world, environment and speculate ‘hereafter’.
The department sincerely follows the university curriculum, which aims to locate the significance of knowing the inner state of mind with clarity, rationality, interpretation of vision and the scientific process of learning, all of which are essential to know one's own self.
To realise the basic aims of the discipline, the department is also committed towards inculcating awareness about man- nature relationship, and tries to focus on the urgent need to develop a fervent respect for nature. In this quest, the department conducts educational tours at places of similar interests so that students can connect to the nature and through it, the inner self. Moreover, special classes for students who confront difficulties in understanding diverse and intricate problems of philosophy, are being taken care of.
The department has felt the inner need to promote outreach programs beyond the confinement of class room teaching, and makes visits to nearby institutes and areas of cognitive interest which surely helps to promote a healthy student-teacher relationship.
The department in its venture to familiarise students with emerging problems and prospects arising in different branches of philosophy, often organises seminars, invited lectures, which not only inspire students to participate in such seminars, but also aids them to make subject specific papers on their own and present them on appropriate forum.
In addition to all these, Wall- magazines are annually made on variant topics of interest and displayed at various corners of the classrooms and corridors exhibiting the talent and creative cult of the students.

Department of Political Science

The beginning of political thinking is often attributed to the ancient Greek writers like Socrates, Plato and Aristotle to name a few. Although the central theme of political science is the state, exclusive attention to it, leads to make political analysis rudimentary, static, formalistic and institutional. Hence the change of emphasis from ‘state’ to ‘power’ has broadened the area of political inquiry and shifted the attention from mere edifices and institutions to actions and processes.  Indeed, the scope of the discipline of Political Science is comprehensive, and it has great significance. In contemporary years, its importance has in fact multiplied. Man is a political animal, and in all spheres of his life he is, directly or indirectly, influenced by politics. For several reasons, the study of Political Science has become indispensable to social welfare and development. There has occurred a spate of political literature in recent times, especially sociological and psychological investigations into behaviours, attitudes and motivations have augmented the scope of political science.
A subject of analysis with such a dynamic scope and subject matter and enriched with theories of variant nature is taught in this institution from its inception (1888) and has concrete outcomes which are mentioned as follows:

Provides information and idea about State and Government:

Political Science provides valuable information and ideas about state, government and many political organisations and institutions to the individual. State is the most universal and powerful of all social institutions, and politically enlightened people are capable of playing a useful role in social and political affairs. The study of Political Science is of immense importance for the efficient organisation and development of the political system, because Political Science is the science of state. In modern times the future leaders of the country are being educated and trained about various aspects of government and administration in different academic institutes and centres and a conceptual training comes from the study of these broad aspects of the subject. The students taking up Political Science as their Major, thus gets an opportunity to come across a host of information and ideas about state, its nature, the scope, the political institutions at work and many related affairs.

Assists in building citizenship qualities:

The knowledge gained by studying Political Science helps in constructing a strong edifice of healthy citizenship. Now-a-days the individual is not only a passive spectator in regard to administration but is inclined to influence its decisions. It is therefore necessary for the citizen to learn about nation-building, the jurisdiction and functions of state. Political awareness contributes to good citizenship. The success of a welfare state depends on the awareness and vigilance of people.  The students who represent the upcoming generation naturally gets motivated by the study of formalities, rights and obligations. They learn to imbibe qualities of generous and thoughtful citizens. Political Science also helps interested students gain good idea about the aims and objectives, and functions of various associations of a state.
Another objective of Political Science is to strike a balance between state and individual. The freedom of individual and power of state should be integrated and harmonised. Political Science studies the limit of state’s control over individual’s freedom and the area of individual’s freedom coupled with the conception of rights.

Educates students on principles of noble living:

The study of this discipline opens up avenues whereby the students learn about the ideals of patriotism, toleration, sacrifice and national integration. It enables them to be broad-minded, and to get rid of different kinds of parochialism such as regionalism, casteism and communalism. The study of politics stimulates international peace and harmony. Political Science has conceived the dream of ‘one- world-state’ through world peace and collaboration. It is now the goal of many international organisations to free the world from the scourge of nuclear weapons and to establish an ambience of peaceful co-existence. George Bernard Shaw has aptly observed, “Political Science is the science by which alone civilization can be saved.” Political Science, being a dynamic social science, contributes to social change. The study of Political Science enables the students to have good knowledge about progressive ideas and revolutionary changes.
Ensures the formation of opinion amongst the younger generation:
This makes it easy to take collective decisions in social, economic and political fields. Besides, the study of Political Science enlightens the mind of the man and enriches the pool of knowledge. Political Science increases the political awareness of man, makes him aware of his freedoms, rights and duties and also reminds the government of its duty and responsibility towards the people. Enlightened, conscious and vigilant citizens will make the government accountable, and significantly contribute towards the establishment of social justice and equality.
Two main pillars of democracy are conscious and alert citizens, and a responsible government. In creating these conditions Political Science plays a vital role. Progress has been made, but the road to meaningful freedom, equality and justice is long. It is important that the efficiency, commitment and integrity of government be increased and the people become conscious, dutiful and vigilant. The study of politics by the students at large contributes to the generation of these qualities in them which makes a positive impact upon the nation.

With these above-mentioned missions, the Department of Political Science of this college was established in the year of 1888. Since then, the department tirelessly makes an effort at delivering an in-depth empirical as well as qualitative understanding of the lively subject of politics for the students which helps them in appreciating and addressing in events such as news reporting, political discussions and debates, domestic and international events.
Advanced and interested learners are encouraged by the department to participate in debates, students' seminars in the College as well as in other institutions. Besides the students are encouraged to participate in Essay-writing competitions, Youth Parliament competitions, Quiz programmes, extempore speeches and allied events connected to the discipline. This is very helpful in improving their communicative skills.  Moreover they annually contribute to Wall Magazines by writing their thoughts on a relevant issue which gets displayed on boards for reading by others.
Environmental awareness is specially inculcated among students of the Department by teaching them the history of environmental movements and its present dynamics which also forms a part of the curriculum. Visits to places where students can unite with the nature are also conducted.
The Department organizes outreach programs along with educational tours, every year, for students, as there is appreciation for learning beyond classrooms. These trips are usually visiting to places of political relevance within the city like the Legislative Assembly or Municipalities and alike.
Since the subject offers dynamism and the students need to keep themselves updated with information every moment, so the teachers make the students aware regarding the availability of academic magazines, newspapers and existing online Journals.
As per the availability of time, the students are skilled to appear for competitive examinations to enter into academic teaching like National Eligibility Test (NET) and State Eligibility Test (SET). The knowledge gained by them in the three years is crucial for their preparations. Moreover, they are also motivated to undertake competitive courses such as Management and its related fields, Journalism, Mass Communication and Law.
The students are aided with the suggestions and study materials to prepare for Civil Services Examination at the national (UPSC) and regional levels. They enjoy a competitive advantage as prospective candidates, due to a strong general knowledge in politics, as well as courses like Indian Political History and Movement, Indian Constitution, Comparative Government and Politics (Foreign Constitutions), International Relations and Public Administration.
Students with philanthropic spirit can also involve themselves with non-governmental organizations, contributing to the society in a very meaningful way.
In addition to all these, with an exposure to the functioning of different political systems within the nation and across the world and their constitutions and governmental formations, students would have a scope in taking up leadership roles as a result of this activity that demands ability and skills. Students with good communication skills and vocabulary can learn a foreign language (allied with International Relations) and being equipped with a knowledge on current affairs can opt for a career as an Interpreter, Ambassador/ Representative or Spokesperson.
